Saint Michael's Church

Saint Michael's Church

The 65-metre-high tower of the Saint Michael's chirch defines the Roeselare skyline. The 16th-century church houses 49 carillon bells and 4 large bells, and is home to the bell ringers’ guild ‘Roeselaarse Klokkengilde’. This guild has been manually ringing the bells daily for over 100 years – a tradition that still exists in only three places in Belgium. In Roeselare, they ring the bells more than anywhere else: not only for weddings and funerals, but also for baptisms, the arrival of Saint Nicholas and even the start of the sales season!

The church is absolutely worth a visit.

  • It was rebuilt in 1504 after a devastating fire.
  • Inside, you’ll find stunning paintings by great historical masters and a central baroque pulpit with beautiful wood carvings.
  • At the back of the church stands the tomb monument of Jan van Kleef and Johanna van Lichtervelde.

The St. Michael's Church also hosted the funeral of cycling legend Jean-Pierre Monseré on 20 March 1971 – attended by nearly 40,000 people.
